Get involved with the Hot Yam! this summer!

We’re on the hunt for volunteers to fill several planning positions (May-August 2012).
By being a part of the Hot Yam! Planning team, you can help build and strengthen the Yam! community, make new friends, and learn to cook (and eat) delicious food!

What you bring: You are reliable, a team player, committed, organized, accessible (i.e. you can be reached), interested in acquiring knowledge of veggies and the food communities in Toronto. You love food.

How we’ll support you: A general Hot Yam! Planning team orientation + training for specific roles from current positions holders and volunteers. You will receive ongoing support from the planning team.

General commitment: Attend weekly planning meetings (~1hr) + minimum one-hour of kitchen shift weekly

Meal Lead Coordinator (2 positions)
Weekly time commitment: 2-3 hours virtual commitment (emails)
General Responsibilities:
- ensure that we have meal leads each week
- let the food orderer know who the meal leads that they can be sent a list of what’s available from suppliers
- check in with meal leads to make sure they know their responsibilities, and check the menu they prepare for seasonality, budget, and nutrition
- respond to meal leading questions
- email CIE reception each week (on the day before Yam! day) with names of meal leads and the shoppers so they can get the keys to kitchen

 
Food Orderer & Shopping Manager (2 positions)
Weekly time Commitment: 1-2 hours per week; shopping manager must be available during shopping hours (2-4pm on Tuesdays)
Responsibilities:
Food orderer:
- Contact person with food suppliers
- Let meal leads know early on in the weekend (before they start planning) what is available from various suppliers
- Get the shopping list from the meal leads and put in food order
- Coordinate with meal leads and shopping manager if there are last minute food order changes

Shopping Manager:
- Be present during Tuesday shopping (2-4pm), along with meal leads.
- Lead shopping expedition to Kensington Market
- Be familiar with product availability at Kensington stores and pricing
- Maintain price list catalog
- Take inventory of leftovers from previous weeks and inform food orderer

 
Volunteer Coordinator (1 position)

Weekly time commitment: 2-3 hours (mostly virtual, ie. emails, plus able to print volunteer sign-up sheet and post in kitchen before prep on Tuesdays)
Responsibilities:
- set up weekly sign up sheet and email volunteers every week
- check number of volunteers and send follow up email to volunteers if necessary
- send out weekly email announcements to eaters
- respond to eater and volunteer questions
- manage listservs (add new emails after each meal)
- print volunteer sign up sheet and post in kitchen before prep on Tuesday (indicate which are new volunteers)

New Volunteer Orientation Facilitator (2 positions)
Weekly time commitment: 2 hours per week in person
Responsibilities:
- Be a friendly face to new volunteers inside the kitchen :)
- Be available to facilitate one-hour orientation on Tuesday evenings and Wednesday during the day.
- Orient new volunteers around Yam! kitchen (where things are stored, point out first aid kit, how to use dishwasher, etc.); go over basic food safety skills; inform volunteers on how Hot Yam! runs, how meals get made each week, and ways to get involved with Hot Yam!
- Bring laptop for new volunteers to fill out Volunteer Form at end of orientation

It’s the last vegan party of the semester!  Don’t miss your fix of delicious for this week, and be sure to check back for updates on when we’ll be back for the summer.  As always, don’t forget that tupperware!

Get your Yam! this week: March 14!

There are all kinds of things to celebrate this week! Come join us Wednesday for yet another awesome vegan lunch party in the name of St. Patrick’s Day, Pi Day, both, none, or whatever else you’d like (spring weather, perhaps?)!  As always, don’t forget that tupperware!

It happens to be the first Wednesday of the month, which means that this week’s meal is going to be pay-what-you-can!  So come celebrate another great meal with us, and spend what makes sense for you!
